ADSL Modem Explained
An ADSL Modem is the little box that is provided to you by a service provider to connect to the internet. An ADSL Modem/Router can be purchased at electronics stores or online. Netgear is a leading manufacturer of these products. Theirs sell for an average of $147 - $169, this may be a cheaper option than purchasing one from your service provider. ADSL is an internet access point that is obtained through a home phone line.
ADSL's meaning is Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. The signal is transmitted through the copper wiring that exists in telephone line wiring. Upstream speeds will vary for your ADSL service, but will generally be slower than downstream data return rates. Combining a modem and a router into one device frees up some space on your desk. Instead of having 2 boxes, you'll only have 1 but will have less USB ports available. Most ADSL Modem/Routers only have 2 additional USB ports. This will allow you to connect up to 2 computers or a computer and a gaming system. The Modem/Router device allows you to have a home network and for more than one person to use the internet at the same time without interrupting your home phone service. One USB port will need to be connected to each device. There will be a separate port on the back of the device for the telephone line to be connected to the Modem/Router. Each service provider is going to have a different speed.
ADSL Service is always on, if your computer is on, your service is running. With other DSL services, if your computer or device is not on, your internet is not running. Having an ADSL modem/router set up is quite convenient unless one of the components built in breaks. It would be nearly impossible to decipher which was not working without having a technician service the device directly.
Those that have the ADSL service and the ADSL Modem/Router combination set up have said that it is well worth the investment. Some have said that their speeds are slow, but it is their personal computer and not their provider that is causing the problem. ADSL service is not available to everyone and is not offered by every provider. Check with major providers in your local area like AT&T, or SBC Global. This can sometimes be faster than cable modem internet.
