Best ADSL Modem Router

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

We are often being asked to give our opinion on which is the best ADSL modem router. This is not an easy question, choosing the best ADSL modem router depends on what features you want.

But we have decided to answer this question simply selecting the best router ourselves and giving you reasons for our selection. The winner of our “Best ADSL Modem Router” is… Netgear DGFV338 ProSafe Wireless ADSL Modem Router! And now we will tell you why:

Pros:

1. Netgear is a company making network equipment therefore routers are something they know how to make both for home, office and large data centres.
2. This router has 8 wired ports unlike many other modem routers that come with 4 ports only.
3. Netgear DGFV338 features dual firewall: SPI and NAT therefore you are under double protection from attacks.
4. Wireless encryption is at the highest level available – WPA2 Enterprise!
5. Netgear DGFV338 allows up-to 50 simultaneous VPN connection – access your PC from anywhere (requires VPN to be set up).
6. This router features dual 5DB antennas giving you very good wireless range – use you laptop from your back garden without loosing connection.
7. Featured network management software – ProSafe is one of the best and easiest to use.
8. Wizards for setup including connection and VPN.
9. ADSL2+ modem and 802.11g access points are built-in.
10. And the last entry (prepare to be surprised), which is not obvious in other descriptions found on the sites that sell this adsl modem router. Netgear DGFV338 has a WAN port for failover. It means that this is the only combination router we are aware off that can work both with your ADSL and cable lines. Therefore if you live in a cable area then you can use it as a cable modem router as well. You can use it as a main connection or as a failover connection in case your ADSL line has any problem.

Cons:

Not any that we are aware of.

Wireless ADSL Modem Router

Wireless ADSL Modem Routers provide extra flexibility when connecting PCs, notebooks and other devices via WiFi. But you are still going to need at least one Ethernet connection to the router simply to configure it. In some properties connection between the floors could drop significantly depending on a type of property and the angle between your Wireless ADSL Router and the actual device like PC or notebook.

There are several common solutions to this problem.

First: Get a Wireless ADSL Modem Router with a longer range. Now, regulations in the EU put a limit on the output power of the transmitting devices. Therefore you can’t really get much more “powerful router” and they all have about the same power output. Best solution is to have ADSL Router with more or longer antennas, like the one below.

Second: Get and install wireless repeaters or extra stations between the floors. This configuration would allow extending the range almost indefinitely by chaining repeater together. This solution requires some extra technical knowledge and would increase equipment load in your home or office.

In many cases if you are not to confident in setting-up ADSL Modem Routers, it is nice to have all compatibility issues to be taken care of beforehand.

In fact if you set up ADSL Router manually (e.g. by accessing it using an IP address) then there is no such thing as compatibility issue. But for some users it is easier to use built-in wizards so only entering few lines like user name and password would be enough.

At the same time you shouldn’t compromise on advance settings and wireless access range as getting familiar with you router might eventually bring you to tweaking it’s settings manually. In our shop there are number of ADSL Modem Routers that meets the above criteria. Today we want to introduce just one of them.

Unable to Connect to Some Websites

Sunday, April 4th, 2010

This question is often being asked by our customers and generally on the Internet. There are several answers why you are not able to connect to a particular site but we would discuss one possible option. This happens when you replace your old ADSL Modem Router with a shiny new one and suddenly you are not able to view certain websites. Particularly we have heard this from people using Philips routers like the one below:

And in many cases the reason why some sites are showing while others are not is impossible to understand. Meanwhile the answer is quite simple. Philips makes decent ADSL Routers but they seem to be a bit overprotective. Many Websites use interactive approach, e.g. can check your screen resolution or browser to adjust themselves accordingly. Virtually all ADSL Modem Routers have a built-in firewall. But somehow the settings for Philips are way to strict which makes this, otherwise good and reliable, device “overprotective”.

To solve the connection problem you should disable the built-in firewall (it is impossible to adjust it’s settings) and use a software firewall like built-in Windows Firewall or ZoneAlarm

These type of connection problem is easy to solve by simply buying one of our bestselling routers (please visit our shop for more details) like the one below.
